Why your fence is graying
Published Jun 30, 2026
Graying is wood losing its natural color from sun exposure and weather. UV light breaks down the lignin in the surface fibers. Rain and wind wash the broken-down material away. Underneath is gray fiber, dust-covered and exposed.
Cosmetically, gray fencing looks tired. Structurally, it is a problem. Gray wood is dust accumulating on bare fiber that traps moisture. The trapped moisture does not dry out completely between rainfalls. The wood stays damp longer than it should. Rot starts.
The fix is restoring the finish so the wood is protected again. We clean the fence, sand where needed to remove gray surface fiber, and apply a professional-grade stain that bonds with the wood and blocks the next round of UV and moisture damage.
If the fence is just starting to gray, we can usually restore without major repair. If it has been gray for years, we may find rot we need to address before staining.
