Transparent vs solid deck stain: which is right for you?
Published Jun 30, 2026
Two questions decide it: what does your wood look like, and what do you want it to look like.
Transparent finish shows the grain. The wood character comes through, the color sits on top of it. Transparent is right when you have nice-looking boards you want to highlight, when you want the deck to read as wood, and when you are willing to refresh the color every few years.
Solid finish covers the grain. The color is uniform across every board, like paint but penetrating. Solid is right when your deck has older, mismatched, or weather-blotched boards you want to unify, when you prefer a single color across the whole surface, and when you want a longer service interval.
Either way, on TD jobs we use the same Expert Stain and Seal product line so the product is doing what it is engineered for. The right choice depends on your deck, not on a default.
