Spring deck prep checklist
Published Jun 30, 2026
A short list to run through before deck season starts.
1. Sweep and rinse. Get the winter debris off. Wet leaves and pine needles sitting on boards through spring trap moisture and accelerate wear.
2. Inspect for damage. Walk the deck looking for split boards, loose railings, popped screws, or soft spots near posts. Most issues are easier to catch in April than in July.
3. Check the finish. Drip a small amount of water on the boards. If it beads, the finish is intact. If it soaks in, the protective layer is gone and the wood is exposed.
4. Look at the railings. Railings take more weather than horizontal boards and often fail first. Check for loose attachments, splitting tops, and chipping finish.
5. Plan ahead. If you can see the deck needs work, schedule the estimate early. Spring books up fast.
