Concrete sealer vs concrete stain

Published Jun 30, 2026

Sealer and stain are not the same thing. They work together.

Stain changes the color or appearance of the concrete. It penetrates the slab and adds pigment. By itself, stain does not protect against traffic, cleaning chemicals, or moisture. It is a cosmetic step.

Sealer protects the concrete and locks the stain in. It blocks moisture, resists abrasion, and gives the surface a finished look that is easier to clean. By itself, sealer can be applied to bare concrete to protect it without changing color.

On a finished floor you almost always want both. Stain first to get the color you want, sealer over the top to lock it in and protect it. On a basement slab you may decide to just seal without staining if you are happy with the natural concrete color.

We will recommend the right combination for your slab on the estimate visit.
