Common problems

Why most fence jobs fail

If your last fence stain peeled or faded inside a year, here is the usual reason.

  • Wrong product

Big-box stain made for porch boards is not what a fence needs. The product that holds on a fence is built for vertical wood and weather exposure.

  • Sprayed without back-brushing

Spraying alone leaves the product sitting on the surface. Without a back-brush pass, the stain never bonds and fails fast in sun and wind.

  • Surface still dirty

If the fence is not cleaned and prepped, the stain bonds to dust and mildew, not the wood. It peels off with the next freeze and thaw.

  • Brand-new wood, stained too soon

Freshly milled fence boards are often too wet to take stain. We check moisture in 15 to 20 spots before applying anything.

The product

Why we use Expert Stain and Seal

Expert Stain and Seal is the only product we put on a fence. It is a true oil-based product engineered to bond with wood instead of just coating it. The result is a finish that ages gracefully over years instead of chipping and peeling within months.

When the color is ready to be refreshed, we come back and restain. No stripping. No surprise damage. That is the difference between a fence you maintain and a fence you keep redoing.

Safe for pets and plants. OSHA-graded for low VOCs. Manufacturer-backed for color retention.

Frequently asked

Fence staining and sealing questions

How long does the stain last?
Most fences hold their color for three to five years, depending on sun exposure and the side of the property. South and west exposures fade faster than shaded sides.
Do I need to be home?
No. Fence staining is exterior work, so we can come and go as needed. We just need access to a water source and an outlet.
Do you stain both sides?
When access allows, yes. Some fences only allow access to one side because of neighbor boundaries; we will note that in the quote.
Do you spray or brush?
Fences are sprayed for even coverage and then back-brushed so the stain penetrates the wood. The back-brush is what makes it last.
Can you stain a brand-new fence?
Yes, often within a week of installation, as long as the wood moisture reads right. We test in 15 to 20 spots before we stain.
Is this safe for my pets and plants?
Yes. The products are OSHA-graded, low-VOC, and safe around pets and vegetation. We just ask that pets stay clear of the fence until the stain is fully dry.
What if it rains?
We watch the forecast and schedule for dry weather. If a surprise shower hits, we let you know and reschedule the affected section.
Do you do touch-ups?
Yes. We walk the finished fence with you, mark anything to touch up, and come back within a week to handle it.
